Mechanical interfaces and formation of a sculpture

My diploma thesis is a reflection on thinking about the process of creating a sculpture. Nowadays, our choice of materials and processes to create a sculpture is almost entirely free. Randomness and lack of control in processing as well as the artist’s interference with the work of art all play an additional part. The common denominator of the task lies in the answers to: “How does the sculpting process influence the creation of the sculpting form?”, “How does the choice of a mechanical interface influence the sculpting form?”, and lastly “How does the choice of material influence the process of creating a sculpture?” I was, therefore, interested in the process of creating a sculpture that is based on a different approach – by using mechanical interfaces. I searched for instances, where the process of creating a work of art is either designed differently or includes mechanical interfaces as part of its final form. The practical part of the thesis includes my works of art and interprets my expression. While creating the sculpture within the framework of sculpture projects mentored by Prof. Roman Makše, I have come up with an interesting way of transforming the soft material that is clay, by means of mechanical interfaces that I have transferred from my home kitchen to the sculpture studio. The thesis consists of a number of abstract elements, which multiplied and supplemented the basic composition. I am also expanding the issue to fitting one’s own sculpture into one’s own surroundings. I am including the interior and the exterior in connection with nature and the urban environment.
