    Abstract

This Master`s thesis addresses and researches the effects of clay use as a support form of help to a long-term unemployed individual to ease their self-exploration process and make their coping with negative effects of unemployment easier. In the field of art therapies, clay use is often neglected and therefore unexplored because most people use methods such as painting and drawing. The reason is most people are not familiar with clay and its characteristics. Despite the lack of insights in this field, experts still insist on positive effects of clay use when dealing with individuals with various issues. First part of my thesis focuses on definitions of art therapies and on contextualization of clay use, which is, further on, explained in theoretical part. My analysis is based on research of clay use in art therapies. Furthermore, I deal with unemployment issue and its negative consequences. Theoretical frame serves as a basis for further directives of qualitative action research and work with individual, included in this research. Empirical part focuses on the key question of my thesis - whether a clay use can alleviate negative effects of a long-term unemployment and influence conveyance of that individual`s emotions. Using a qualitative medium, I guided that individual through the process of self-exploration and expression of emotions, formed as a result of a long-term unemployment. I conducted a qualitative action research that integrated 35 years old unemployed individual. The research consisted of weekly meetings that lasted between 60 and 90 minutes and were being held for a period of three months. I interacted with that person, our meetings were topically diverse and structured. For the purpose of my research, I used an observational and questioning method, documentary material and diary notes. The results of this research confirmed that clay use can actually have a positive effect on a long-term unemployed individual. My Master`s thesis includes a detailed description of topical activities for clay use in the process of art therapy and as such, I believe everyone who wish to include clay use in their therapeutical process, can benefit from it.
