Abstract
My article deals with the importance of verbal expression in the Reggio Emilia approach. Gardner's comprehension of verbal intelligence is first compared to de Saussur's dichotomy - language vs. speech, followed by the contemporary European comprehension of the communication competence and the communicative ability, respectively, and the position it takes up in the Slovenian curriculum for kindergartens. In the Reggio Emilia approach an important role is assigned to the pedagogy of listening, which is based on the active dialogue between the educator and the adult, in which the child learns the basics of critical listening and speaking, thus my article also deals with the types of listening and the role play as the essential dialogic/communicative elements. The child's knowledge on listening and speaking strategies creates a basis for the development of his literacy and later school performance.
