    Abstract

The thesis titled Child's Reaction to the Abstract and Realistic Illustration consists of theoretical and empirical work. The opening chapter defines the concepts of picture book and illustration, focusing on an abstract and realistic illustration. Picture book is intended for a child during his pre-reading period and beginnings of reading period, therefore it is the first book child encounters. During my research, I became also interested in development of a picture book in Slovenia and types of picture books that differ in terms of internal arrangement, creative process, difficulty level and choice of text. Afterwards I describe a qualified picture book and how the illustration influences child’s visual development and reading literacy. I also focus on the role of an adult who needs to acquaint the child with different literary genres and offer books with a variety of illustrations. In the pedagogical work of the thesis, I analyzed through the qualitative research how the abstract and the realistic illustration affects the child's narration and artistic creation. With the collected data, I tried to answer the research questions that I asked myself at the beginning of the survey itself. I tested 20 children from the kindergarten Pirniče, 10 girls and 10 boys, aged 5 or 6 years. Each child narrated a story based on two illustrations; realistic images of Jelka Reichman and illustrations with abstract images of Meta Wraber. Their storytelling was followed by creating illustrations based on one of the stories with painting material, such as drawing paper, water, brushes and watercolor paints.
