Play is the prevailing activity of preschool children. It is not only their basic activity but also the need of every child and essential element of their normal physical and mental development. In the theoretical part of this diploma work we introduce theoretical frameworks of child development, the importance of play and development characteristics of children aged four to six. Didactic toys and waste materials most often used in kindergartens are presented. In the empirical part we present results of the questionnaire answered by professional workers of Jesenice Kindergarten. The ways of producing didactic games out of waste materials are described. The games were made by children aged four to six with the help of adults. They were made exclusively of waste materials collected and brought to kindergarten by children and their parents. The results of the questionnaire and observations made during producing and using waste material didactic games lead us to conclusions that certain waste materials are suitable for making various didactic games in kindergartens that children like to play with such toys and also like to make them.
