In the preschool period a child should be given a lot of possibilities that would encourage use of all his sense organs. The research was made in the diploma thesis about how chidren aged 2 to 3 recognized and remembered different fragrances. I also identify if these children can draw a distinction between eatable and non-eatable fragrances by using smell. 12 children took part in the research. First, children were tested to see if they recognized different fragrances with expressive scent (lavender, cinnamon, mandarin, toothpaste). Then they took part in activities that mostly encouraged smell. When they finished with these activities they were asked to recognize and remember different fragrances. Furthermore, my attention was also to find out if smell was used by children aged 2 to 3 to smell things as well as what substances belonged to eatable or non-eatable ones. The results show that at the beginning most of the children aged 2 to 3 did not recognize the given fragrances. During the activities where smell was encouraged they made a progress in recognizing and remembering the fragrances. Howerer, it can be said that children of this age, with smell, are not able to make a difference between eatable and non-eatable substances. I can conclude that it is of vital imporance if children aged 2 to 3 are encouraged to use all sense organs. Then children can be more aware of them and they help them discover the world around them.
