    Abstract

This thesis is an exploration of the event and performance as one of the practices of contemporary art that is currently enjoying widespread popularity. The opening chapters address the meaning behind these terms followed by research on the development of this medium of expression throughout history. The focus then shifts to the character of performance. Throughout the contemplation I investigate its relation with the basic elements of fine art expression, as performance art is deeply rooted in the avant-garde movements of 20th centuary which were based on the classical elements of art. The second critical aspect I am interested in is the question of capital. In the very core of event and performace lies revolt against the production of art objects, which is supported by the art market. Its economy creates rules and norms of art itself and thereby controls it. Avant-garde art movements started producing events as a form of art, for one cannot buy nor own something as inconsistent and unrepeatable. But yet it efficiently adresses the crowd. So does performance art still stand outside the capital and art economy sphere today? Beside critical aspects I want to also point out creative ones. Performance as a very specific medium of expression opens up a wide range of creativity. It binds artists with the crowd and the participation of both sides determins its final shape. What is the relation between critical and creative aspects and how does the dominant elite react to both? I will introduce a performance which I did in cooperation with Evelina Hägglund and in the very end show an example of including performance in the high school curriculum.
