The purpose of the thesis, which presents Aesop's fables, is to acquaint children with fables, help them recognise their characteristics and moral lessons, and encourage them to depict the fables, all through the project "Learning about Aesop's fables in kindergarten". The theoretical part deals with fables and animal stories and delineates the differences between them. It looks into the history and structure of fables, the creation of fables on the Slovene territory and domestic and foreign fable authors. As for the empirical part, it presents the project involving initial motivation and the drawings, and provides comments and analysis. A total of 20 children aged from 5 to 6 years and attending the unit Labod of the Ciciban kindergarten in Novo mesto were used as a sample. The thesis also contains illustrations for a clearer demonstration. We found that at first, the children did not know what a fable was. In dealing with the fables, some of the children managed to recognise certain characteristics, while others answered the question "What is a fable?" with the help of their parents. They put their written answers into a "special box" in front of the playroom. The children often failed to work out the meaning of certain words in some of the fables. To this end, we helped them find synonyms so they could understand the story. Searching for synonyms proved to be difficult at first, as was the question "What is this fable trying to teach us?" Moreover, the children were interested in how short the fables were. It was a positive surprise that they managed to connect the behaviour of animal characters with human characteristics. They were mostly attracted to friendship-related stories, to which they could relate the most.
