Abstract
The thesis describes how mathematicians calculated the approximations of the number π by using the series, based on the arc-tangent function. It also describes the proof of irrationality of the circular constant. The last two chapters show how to calculate the approximations of the number π, and the deviations in calculating the circumference and area of a circle and the volume and the area of a sphere by using different approximations for the number π, all with the help of the Derive computer program.
