Download (2849Kb)

This diploma paper deals with the life and work of the Islamic scientist Alhazen, who worked in Cairo at the beginning of the 2nd millennium. Alhazen is mostly recognised for his study of optics, mathematics, physics and astronomy. He also left his mark in philosophy, physiology and medicine. Alhazen was also the first to introduce a scientific method where an experiment needs to be done before giving facts. In this paper, his most important contributions to optics are introduced and presented first. Alhazen's discussions about astronomy are described later on. The main focus of the diploma paper is the discussion of »Alhazen's problem« or the »billiard problem«. The paper continues with the emphases of his work in mathematics. Alhazen is known as the father of modern optics because of his tremendeous contribution to this field of science. Therefore, his impact on the European science is described in the last part of this paper.
