    Abstract

The master's thesis illuminates educational responses to actual social challenges. Just as values are changing in wider society, so also are they changing in the field of pedagogy. Individualism is charateristic of modernity while social conditions stimulate high competitiveness. Due to continuously increasing movement, multiculturalism is also becoming a constant in our social environment. There have always existed divisions between »us« and »them«, a reality that is too often also felt by children who find themselves at disadvantaged starting points because of their minority cultural background. It is therefore necessary to find solutions, both in terms of cultural diversity as well as high competitiveness and individualism. The master's thesis describes inter-cultural upbringing and education; it explore various approaches of moral upbringing. The value of solidarity is treated as a »bridge between cultures« and as a possible solution to a lack of comaraderie and mutual help. It also describes the trappings of solidarity, such as are often felt in cases of volunteerism, where the strength of the volunteer is often strengthened, while the recipient of aid may experience feelings of helplessness. It emphasizes the importance of reciprocity between those engaged in such exchanges. The notions of friendship, empathy and collegiality are illuminated as pillars of solidarity. The empirical part of the thesis enlight theoretical concepts with the study of a case in which particular primary schools are selected on the basis of their being understood as interesting for the purposes of this study. Following the method of the snow ball effect the thesis uses interviews to present the visions, practices and insights of school leaders and of their schools, which include elements of multiculturalism and/or solidarity.
