    Abstract

The unit on acids, bases and salts is dealt with in primary and secondary schools and can be very interesting to students because they encounter these substances on an everyday basis. In my Diploma thesis I will focus on bases, especially on how the students could determine in the most interesting way whether a solution is acid or base and which solution (base) that actually is. My goal is to develop simple qualitative tests to determine inorganic bases in primary schools. In nature, bases are less frequent than acids, they can be found in plants, where they mostly act as poisons, but in small doses they often have healing effects. In household they are used in some cleaning detergents and they are also used in some industrial processes. Carbonates, oxides and hydroxides of the elements in the first and second group of the periodic table are bases. Especially their hydroxides are strong bases. They are solid white crystalline substances, mostly soluble in water and very corrosive, the same applies also to their solutions.
