The first section of the theoretical part of the thesis points to the significance of environmental education in kindergarten; environmental education is increasingly important in the modern world and functions as a strategy for the preservation of the environment. Unfortunately, environmental education seems to remain quite overlooked or left to teachers’ sensitivity about the environment and their personal opinion regarding environmental education in preschool. The second section of the theoretical part touches on the importance of waste, both positive and negative characteristics of packaging and the area of design, which we find particularly important, even though it may not be an independent educational area. Moreover, the thesis focuses on the development and learning of children in the preschool period and the significance of active learning in that period. The practical part of the thesis displays some of the most creative activities we conducted and products/ad-hoc toys we made from waste materials throughout the year. In the thesis we underline the aspect of technical creativity of children when dealing with packaging waste that raises endless possibilities for play and creativity; with a little imagination and inventiveness it is easy to meet the children’s need for play and creativity. The final analysis suggests that those materials that children can handle themselves, explore, put together and manipulate are the best because they ignite the children's imagination. In addition, the children proved to be extremely good in observing and planning as they could imagine their creations based on the materials they were offered.
