    Abstract

    This bachelor thesis explores the norms which evolve in the groups of the youth with emotional, behavioural and social disorders, i. e. those who live in residential care institutions. The second part introduces the theoretical frame of norms. Although they have a very important part within the field of social psychology, they have been unjustly overlooked for quite some time. I continue by defining the population and by problematizing the current social standpoint, which has an important influence on the ratio and the status of the youth in the residential care institutions. These adolescents are labelled as “different” by comparison with their peers and this is the main reason why I conducted the research presented in the third part. Using the focus group method in one of the Slovenian residential care institutions, I explore what are the norms which cause the adolescents to form certain groups, what are their characteristics and how they differentiate according to sex. The findings show an inferior internalization and fluidity of norms related to the appearance of the groups, whereas the norms related to the activities and the orientation of the groups are firmly internalized. An interesting fact is that the norms for which the group strives are socially desired, worrying are only their maintenance and sanctions, which can be very aggressive when it comes to a violation. Besides, the findings offer us some instructions for our further pedagogical work.
