    Abstract

Domestic violence exists. It is here in spite of the fact that some people turn a blind eye to it and pretend that the problem does not exist. It is still a topic which is rarely discussed and is filled with myths and stereotypes that only maintain the existing situation. Violence is a social, not a personal problem. That is why it is necessary for the society to take appropriate action and provide necessary forms of assistance to women who are victims of violence. In the theoretical part of my diploma work I will look into the characteristics of a violent relationship and examine the forms of aid offered to women who are victims of domestic violence. I will focus on the safe houses (women's shelter) as a form of aid and the importance of social networks in solving the distress of experiencing of violence. In the empirical part I will interview two women and thus explore, what forms of aid and support they have been given before they took shelter in a safe house, during their stay and after they left the safe house. I wish to discover what living in a safe house meant for them and for their future.
