    Abstract

Traffic accidents have become a part of everyday life. Experiencing traumatic event, such as a serious traffic accident, can cause a variety of consequences that usually completely change a person`s life. The aim of this diploma thesis was to research and present the consequences of traffic accident as traumatic event and survivors`s way of coping with them, in where protective and risk factors of traumatized person have an important role. In the empirical part I interviewed a person who experienced a serious traffic accident in his youth which caused serious physical injury. I found out that serious car accident can cause a variety of psychological, social, physical and economical consequences and coping with them is a lifelong process. It turns out that the most important protective factors in the process of recovery from trauma are individual`s positive attitude and social support (family and partner). The most important among risk factors are negative and stigmatizing responses of social environment towards physical injury, architectural barriers in the environment and difficulties to cope with physical injury among the family members of the interviewee.
