    Energetics is extremely important for humanity and its development. In Slovenia, a third of all electric energy comes from hydroelectric power plants. This form of electricity generation is environmentally friendly as it does not contribute to global warming and climate change since it does not emit greenhouse gasses. During their course of schooling, Slovenian pupils are taught about power plants at several different subjects but never go in detail and therefore fail to see the big picture. This thesis was written especially for this reason as it provides an insight into operation of hydroelectric power plants. To name just a few points, it describes how a hydroelectric power plant works, presents the use of different turbines, explains how a generator operates, how energy is stored and transmitted. In addition, the thesis describes other resources of renewable energy. The thesis should serve primarily as an aid to guides at the Technical Museum of Slovenia in order to explain the visitors to the museum the operation of a hydroelectric power plant. This should be quite useful as the Museum keeps its own 30 kW hydroelectric power plant Bistra. It would be a wonderful opportunity for visiting pupils to get a complete understanding of the topic.
