    The diploma paper deals with the notion of giftedness. I described the characteristics of gifted pupils, their learning and personal characteristics, as well as the procedure of identifying gifted pupils. I also listed the difficulties often faced by gifted pupils and described the role of the teacher in working with gifted pupils in the school. In the empirical part of the paper I dealt with the role of the teacher in the process of identifying gifted pupils in primary school. I was interested in teachers’ experiences in recording gifted pupils and their professional opinion about the grading scales for identifying gifted pupils. Finally, my aim was to assess the actual implementation of individualised programmes for the identified gifted pupils. 32 teachers took part in the research at one of the Primary Schools in municipality of Lendava. They provided data using a questionnaire. I used the gathered information to answer the questions and determined that teachers identify the characteristics of gifted pupils well and are well trained to work with gifted pupils. When identifying gifted pupils they mostly take into consideration the opinion of educational professionals and other teachers which have already taught pupils before. Most of the teachers stated that they would need additional training, mostly on the field of motivation and classroom adjustment at work with gifted pupils.
