    The number of immigrants and students with a migrant background in European countries as well as in Slovenia is increasing. However, neither the strategies for integrating immigrant students into schools nor those for preparing of the entire pupil and student population to live in a multicultural society are satisfying. The existing recommendations and guidelines are underfunded and poorly implemented in practice. In Slovene high schools, language course is the only systematically implemented support for immigrants. Other forms of support depend on teachers' sensibility and inventiveness. Mother tongue tuition is not available and considering that students report on intolerance in the school environment, tolerance education is not achieving its goals. In order to look at the situation through the eyes of those most concerned by the issue, experiences of immigrant students who attend secondary schools of Tehniški šolski center Nova Gorica will be presented in the empirical part of the thesis. They report mainly on problems related to Slovene language skills, establishing social networks and certain school subjects. On the other hand, better language skills and social networks are also a major factor facilitating integration into the receiving society. To sum up, education for immigrant students and intercultural education may be improved; experiences and needs of those involved in the process of education may be taken as a starting point of the improvement.
