    Abstract

    In the modern world, more and more people need several various forms of literacy and higher levels of its particular forms. Literacy is continuously developing capability of individuals so they can use socially accepted arranged systems of symbols for receiving, understanding, making and usage of the text for living in the family, school, work unit and in society. The knowledge and skills gained, as well as the capabilities of individuals being developed, enable an individual a successful personal growth and responsible behaviour in professional and social life (Nacionalna strategija za razvoj pismenosti 2005, page 6). The early literacy which is also called arising literacy is gained by the children spontaneously and on their own initiative for a longer period of time in the time before school literacy process. It contains pre-reading and pre-writing abilities; in the time sequence a child first develops a concept of printing, next comes graphic and phonologic awareness as well as the awareness of sound-letter accordance and word reading with decodation (Grginič 2005, page 68). In the first part of my Master’s degree paper I presented fundamental theoretical ideas of early literacy. I defined the basic components of early literacy, which are essential for content understanding of presented topic. Then it follows the description of perceiving development in the correlation to development of early literacy at the preschool period. It is important that the pedagogues consider the level of development of particular child and adjust to it the activities; definitely the learning should not be adjusted automatically to the steady process order. I have analysed the Curriculum for kindergartens (1999) as regards to activities connected to early literacy. This was the starting point of the empirical part in which I have found out, basing on the research, what is the opinion of pedagogues about their education at the Faculty of education which they attended (UL, UM, UP) and whether they are extra professionally educating themselves concerning this topic; whether they assimilated modern didactical strategies or whether they have enough suitable didactical sources for developing early literacy at the preschool age. In my Master’s degree paper I used the terms early literacy and arising literacy, which are regular terms at Slovene specialist literature in the last decade.
